SWAT: A breast cancer awareness walk and ceremony were held at Saidu Sharif Teaching Hospital in Swat to raise awareness about breast cancer and educate women about its early symptoms, timely diagnosis, and treatment.
The event was attended by Chief Executive of Saidu Sharif Hospital Professor Dr. Israr-ul-Haq, Professor Dr. Nadeem, Professor Dr. Sania Khattak, senior doctors, and women from the community.
Speaking on the occasion, medical experts said October is observed worldwide as Breast Cancer Awareness Month to promote awareness, encourage the early identification of symptoms, and highlight the importance of timely medical consultation.
They said breast cancer is among the most common cancers affecting women worldwide. However, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can significantly improve treatment outcomes and increase the chances of recovery.
The experts urged women to remain vigilant about their health and never ignore unusual changes in their breasts. They explained that symptoms such as a lump, unusual swelling, changes in skin texture or colour, and abnormalities in the nipple should prompt immediate consultation with a qualified doctor.
They further emphasised the importance of understanding one’s body and recognising unusual changes. However, they clarified that self-examination does not replace professional medical examinations or recommended screening procedures.
Women participating in the awareness walk stressed the need to break the social stigma and silence surrounding breast cancer. They said women should be encouraged to discuss their health concerns openly, without fear or hesitation, and seek medical care without unnecessary delay.
The medical experts highlighted that public awareness, early diagnosis, and appropriate treatment are essential in the fight against breast cancer. They urged women and their families to take potential symptoms seriously and seek professional medical advice whenever unusual changes are noticed.
The awareness campaign concluded with a message that accurate information, timely medical consultation, and community support are vital to combating breast cancer and protecting women’s health.
