Tehran: Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf has described the Republican Party’s defeat in the US midterm elections as the American people’s verdict against war. President Donald Trump, for his part, acknowledged that the war with Iran affected the election results.
In a post on X, Qalibaf wrote that whether out of conscience or the burden of rising prices, the American people have rejected war, and that Iran endorses that message. He warned that if the US government protects the interests of global powers and blackmailers against the wishes of its own people, it will face serious consequences of Iran’s refusal.
Expressing surprise at the outcome, Trump said he believed Republicans should have performed better. He admitted the Iran war had an impact, but said voters understand the importance of his actions on Iran. He argued that, historically, his actions against Iran matter far more than today’s election results, since the world’s biggest state sponsor of terrorism cannot be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons.
The Iran war and the resulting rise in fuel prices had also split Trump’s own supporters, with many openly criticizing the war’s consequences. Trump said some Republican candidates did win, but that he himself was not on the ballot, adding that had he been, the party would have won by a landslide.
