WASHINGTON: An online campaign against electing Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries as Speaker of the House is gaining momentum in the United States. The petition has so far gathered 666,025 signatures. It urges Democratic members not to vote for Jeffries for Speaker when the new Congress convenes in January 2027.
The petition was launched on September 3 by Nicole Whited on Change.org. It appeals to all new members of the 120th Congress to reject the current Democratic leader and choose another candidate. It states that Democrats “should get a choice” and calls for a competitive and transparent Speaker election process.
The petition argues that the Speaker should represent Democratic voters rather than the party leadership. It urges lawmakers to review Jeffries’ public record, policy positions, campaign donor record and leadership before voting. Other Democratic House members are encouraged to put themselves forward for the post, since the outcome has not yet been decided.
