A book titled “From Partition to Pioneer”, chronicling the life and achievements of the late Prof. Bashir Ahmed, widely regarded as the Father of Neurosurgery in Pakistan, was launched during the International Neuro Conference — PINSCON 2025, held at the Punjab Institute of Neurosciences (PINS) in Lahore.
The event, presided over by Prof. Asif Bashir, Executive Director of PINS and son of the late neurosurgeon, was attended by a large number of national and international neurosurgeons, medical experts, and social and political dignitaries. The family of Prof. Bashir Ahmed, including his wife, children, and grandchildren, also participated in the ceremony.
Renowned industrialist and philanthropist Syed Babar Ali, the Chief Guest, paid tribute to Prof. Bashir Ahmed’s pioneering contributions, calling him “a national asset who elevated neurosurgery in Pakistan to global standards.” He praised Prof. Ahmed’s instrumental role in establishing the country’s first neurosurgery units and mentoring generations of specialists.
In his address, Prof. Asif Bashir described the ceremony as a moment of historical importance for PINS, noting that “the gathering of international experts is a testament to my father’s legacy.” He pledged to continue his father’s mission of advancing neurosurgical care and research in Pakistan.
Principal Allama Iqbal Medical College (AMC) Prof. Farooq Afzal lauded Prof. Ahmed’s professional excellence, saying he “brought international recognition to Lahore General Hospital neurosurgery through his skill, intellect, and compassion.”
Speakers described the book as a source of inspiration for young neurosurgeons, presenting a complete account of Prof. Bashir Ahmed’s struggle, sacrifice, and success. They termed it both an intellectual and ethical legacy, reflecting the foundations of modern neurosurgery in South Asia.
International speakers, including Prof. Fadi Charbel (Chairman, Neurosurgery, University of Illinois, USA) and Prof. Essa Muhammad, joined the event virtually and in person, praising Prof. Ahmed’s academic and research contributions and recognizing him as a regional pioneer in neurosurgical science.
Distinguished attendees included Secretary Health Punjab Azmat Mahmood, Vice Chancellor KEMU Prof. Mahmood Ayaz, Prof. Khalid Mahmood, Prof. Riaz Raja, Prof. Al-Fareed Zafar, Prof. Nazir Ahmed, and Prof. Bilal Mohiuddin, among others.
Prof. Bashir Ahmed’s family expressed gratitude to the participants, saying the event marked not only national appreciation but also global recognition of his lifelong contributions to medical science and humanity.
