Peshawar: The prime suspect in the murder case of Dr. Wardah Mushtaq, who was abducted and killed in Abbottabad last week, has been killed in a police encounter, the Inspector General of Police for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa said on Saturday.
According to the KP Police chief, the main accused, identified as Shamrez, was killed during an exchange of fire with police. He said the suspect had been on the run since the incident, while other individuals named in the case had already been arrested earlier.
The police chief stated that investigative teams worked round the clock to track down the suspect, leading to this latest development in the high-profile case.
Dr. Wardah Mushtaq, a doctor at the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital in Abbottabad, was abducted and later killed last week, triggering widespread outrage.
Earlier, Abbottabad District Police Officer Haroon Rasheed said during a press conference that Dr. Wardah had entrusted 67 tolas of gold to her friend, Rida, about two years ago. When she later demanded its return, she was allegedly abducted and brutally murdered.
According to police, Dr. Wardah was killed on the same day she was abducted. The post-mortem report revealed that her neck bone was broken and that the cause of death was strangulation and suffocation. Clear signs of physical torture were also found on her body.
Police have also arrested the husband of the female suspect, identified as Waheed, the owner of a local business, and nominated him in the case. Authorities said provisions of the Anti-Terrorism Act have been added to the charges against the arrested suspects.
Investigations into the case are ongoing.
