Islamabad/Tehran: Iranian Member of Parliament Syed Mahmoud Nabavian, who participated in the first round of US-Iran peace talks in Islamabad, has declared that negotiations with the United States no longer hold any value following America’s attack and seizure of an Iranian cargo ship.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Nabavian said the US attack on the Iranian-flagged cargo ship (reportedly MV Touska) in the Gulf of Oman/near Strait of Hormuz yesterday has changed the situation completely. He called for a strong response against what he described as “these terrorist bandits” and warned that the enemy should now await the harsh reaction of the Iranian nation.
Iranian media quoted Nabavian as saying: “After America’s attack on the Iranian ship yesterday, talks have lost all importance. It is now time to give a full and proper response to these terrorist looters. The enemy must wait for the strong reaction of the Iranian people.”
The remarks come amid heightened tensions as the fragile two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran nears its expiry. The US has justified the action by saying the Iranian vessel attempted to breach its naval blockade, while Iran has condemned it as a ceasefire violation and maritime aggression.
This development casts serious doubt over the second round of indirect or mediated talks scheduled in Islamabad, where a high-level US delegation led by Vice President JD Vance was expected to arrive.
