MOSCOW/KYIV — Russia said on Sunday that Ukraine carried out a massive overnight drone attack, targeting Moscow and other regions with more than 600 drones, killing and injuring several people. Russia responded with ballistic missile strikes on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the city’s air defense systems destroyed 201 drones over the Moscow region, while most others were shot down before reaching the city. Moscow region Governor Andrei Vorobyov called it one of the largest attacks in recent times, saying an 83-year-old man was killed when a drone struck a residential building, with several others injured across the region.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials reported a fresh Russian ballistic missile strike on Kyiv overnight. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said explosions were heard across the city, prompting authorities to urge residents to take shelter while emergency teams were dispatched to multiple locations. Klitschko wrote on Telegram that fires had broken out in several parts of the city.
Ukraine’s air force said other regions, particularly Kremenchuk and Kryvyi Rih, also reported missile, glide bomb, and drone attacks. Neither side’s claims could be independently verified.
