PARIS — French actress and author Adèle Haenel has sparked controversy after making strong remarks on Gaza during a live broadcast of the literary show “La Grande Librairie.” France Télévisions temporarily removed the replay of the September 9 episode from its online platform.
In the show’s “carte blanche” segment, Haenel said, “Israel is committing genocide in Palestine, and France is complicit,” calling on viewers to demand sanctions against Israel. France Télévisions denied the move amounted to censorship, describing it as a “precautionary” step pending review by media regulator Arcom, citing broadcasting rules requiring balanced perspectives on contentious geopolitical issues.
Left-wing party La France Insoumise called the removal censorship, while a right-wing lawmaker criticized Haenel’s remarks as “propaganda in favor of Hamas.” Haenel responded on social media, saying the move itself illustrated the very silencing she had spoken about on the show. The broadcaster says the replay could be restored if Arcom finds no violation.
