Washington — The Trump administration’s investigation into Minnesota Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar is aimed at building a case to revoke her US citizenship and ultimately deport her, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing US officials and others familiar with the probe.
According to the report, investigators are examining how Omar obtained US citizenship after arriving from Somalia decades ago. They are also reviewing matters related to her late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, who brought Omar and other family members to the United States from a Kenyan refugee camp in 1995.
Federal agents searched Omar’s home in Washington, DC, on Monday morning. The Justice Department said the enforcement action was part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation. Investigators reportedly seized several items from the residence, including her mobile phone, notebooks, personal computer and passport. Only Omar and her husband were present at the time.
The report said authorities have also issued more than a dozen subpoenas, including to some of Omar’s relatives, who are being asked to testify before a federal grand jury in Minnesota.
The search came nearly three weeks before the US midterm elections, in which Omar is seeking re-election. She criticised the raid as an attempt by the Trump administration to intimidate political opponents and weaponise federal law-enforcement agencies, saying: “They will not silence me.”
