Islamabad, Pakistan – November 4, 2025:
A powerful explosion occurred inside the Supreme Court of Pakistan building on Monday morning, injuring at least twelve people and causing panic among staff and visitors.
According to police, the blast took place in the basement canteen of the Supreme Court where maintenance work on an air-conditioning gas system was underway. The explosion caused parts of the building to shake, prompting lawyers and court employees to rush outside.
Islamabad’s Inspector General (IG) of Police, addressing the media outside the court, confirmed that the explosion was caused by a gas leak from the air-conditioning unit. “The blast occurred at around 10:55 a.m. while technicians were repairing the AC gas line. Twelve people were injured — three have been taken to PIMS Hospital and nine to Polyclinic. Two of the injured are in critical condition,” the IG said.
Officials added that gas leakage had reportedly been detected for several days before the incident. “The explosion was purely accidental — there is no indication of foul play,” the police chief clarified.
Most of those injured were AC technicians and maintenance staff. One technician sustained severe burn injuries, with nearly 80 percent of his body affected.
The blast was strong enough to be heard across the building, and court proceedings were temporarily disrupted. Courtroom No. 6 sustained minor structural damage, sources confirmed.
Authorities have launched an inquiry to determine whether safety protocols were violated during the maintenance work.
