Islamabad: The Federal Government of Pakistan has announced a major $1 billion investment in Artificial Intelligence (AI) to be made by 2030, aiming to strengthen the country’s technological infrastructure and digital economy.
According to sources, the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication will lead the initiative. In the first phase, the focus will be on developing core digital infrastructure, particularly high-performance computing power and Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) essential for advanced AI systems.
The project will be implemented through the Ignite National Technology Fund. Both public and private sectors, along with startups and researchers, will be provided access to computing resources and GPUs to accelerate AI research, development, and adoption across various industries.
Officials described the provision of GPUs and high-performance computing as a revolutionary step that will lower barriers for innovation, empower the youth (who make up 60% of the population), and promote an AI ecosystem in Pakistan.
The announcement was made by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during the inaugural Indus AI Week in Islamabad, highlighting the government’s commitment to building a knowledge-based economy.
