Islamabad: Pakistan has stepped up its diplomatic activities to facilitate dialogue between the United States and Iran as regional tensions rise following the US seizure of the Iranian cargo ship MV Touska.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar held a telephone conversation today with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi. The two leaders discussed the latest regional situation, with a particular focus on the ongoing ceasefire and efforts to maintain peace and stability.
According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, both sides emphasised the need for continued dialogue and engagement to resolve current issues. Dar stressed that diplomatic efforts are essential to de-escalate tensions in the region.
This phone call comes at a critical time. After the US attack and seizure of the Iranian vessel, Iran has made further negotiations conditional on the lifting of the American naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz area. Tehran has also expressed reluctance for the next round of talks for now, citing the incident as a ceasefire violation.
Pakistan, which is playing a key mediating role in the “Islamabad Process,” is actively working to keep communication channels open and restart indirect or direct talks between Washington and Tehran before the fragile two-week ceasefire expires.
