Washington D.C.
US President Donald Trump issued a significant statement on social media, calling on Iran to immediately release 8 Iranian women prisoners who are currently awaiting execution.
In a direct message addressed to Iranian negotiators, Trump wrote: “I would greatly appreciate the release of these women. Please, do not harm the prisoners.” He made clear that such a gesture would signal good faith from Tehran at a critical moment in ongoing diplomatic engagement between the two nations.
The US President stated that the release of the women would be the best possible opening to negotiations, accelerating the process of confidence-building between both sides. The statement comes as Washington and Tehran continue indirect talks covering Iran’s nuclear programme and a range of other outstanding issues.
Human rights organisations have welcomed Trump’s remarks but urged that the statement be backed by tangible diplomatic pressure rather than remaining at the level of social media messaging.
Tehran has yet to issue any official response at the time of publication.
