LAHORE: Under the “Safe Monsoon Vision” of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, rapid progress is being made on mega underground water storage tank projects in Lahore to effectively manage rainwater and address urban flooding issues. In this regard, construction work on modern water storage tanks is underway at various locations under the directions of Secretary Housing Punjab Noor-ul-Amin Mengal.
According to the spokesperson of the Housing Department, five new underground water storage tanks are currently under construction in Lahore. Upon completion, the total number of functional mega water storage tanks in the city will reach 18.
The spokesperson stated that approximately 90 percent work on the Islam Pura Baba Ground Water Tank has been completed, while 65 percent work on the Lakshmi Chowk Water Storage Tank, 50 percent on the Chuburji Underground Water Storage Tank, 40 percent on the UET Water Tank, and 35 percent on the Barkat Market Water Storage Tank has been completed.
According to the spokesperson, the combined storage capacity of these under-construction water tanks is 7 million gallons, which will enable large-scale rainwater storage and significantly help resolve urban flooding issues in the city.
The spokesperson further stated that in the past, several feet of rainwater accumulated on major roads, causing severe inconvenience to commuters and residents. However, after the completion of these projects, the situation is expected to improve considerably.
On the directions of Secretary Housing Punjab Noor-ul-Amin Mengal, special instructions have been issued to the concerned departments to ensure the completion of all projects within the stipulated timeframe so that maximum relief can be provided to citizens before the monsoon season.
The spokesperson added that, under the directions of the Chief Minister Punjab, several underground water tanks in Lahore are already functional, while work on additional projects is progressing swiftly.
According to the spokesperson, the Government of Punjab is committed to implementing public-friendly policies and utilizing all available resources to provide better, safer, and modern civic facilities to the people.
