Risalpur — Pakistan Railways has achieved a significant industrial milestone as the Locomotive Factory Risalpur (LFR) successfully demonstrated the transfer of partial locomotive assembly technology, marking a pivotal step toward self-reliance in railway engineering.
In a landmark technical showcase, engineers and skilled workers at the facility assembled 102 locomotives of various types using locally applied manufacturing processes — a visible proof of the successful technology transfer programme.
Officials described the achievement as a cornerstone in reducing Pakistan’s dependence on imported rolling stock. The initiative is expected to generate skilled employment, reduce foreign exchange outflows, and strengthen the country’s industrial base in the rail sector.
Railway authorities stated that this breakthrough lays the groundwork for full-scale indigenous locomotive production in future phases, with efforts already underway to acquire more advanced manufacturing technologies. The development is seen as a key component of Pakistan’s broader strategy to modernise and revitalise its national railway infrastructure.
