LAHORE: Principal of Ameer-ud-Din Medical College, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Farooq Afzal, has emphasized that mental health is even more important than physical health, noting that mental illness can make a person entirely dependent on others, unlike many physical disabilities.
He expressed these views while addressing an awareness walk and an awareness skit organized by the Department of Psychiatry at Lahore General Hospital (LGH) to mark World Schizophrenia Awareness Day.
Prof. Farooq Afzal stated that mental health should never be neglected under any circumstances. He explained that while individuals with physical limitations can often continue to manage their daily lives with some assistance, severe mental health conditions can significantly impair independence and quality of life.
“Schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders can be effectively managed through timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment, enabling patients to lead dignified, productive, and fulfilling lives,” he said.
The awareness walk was attended by Head of the Department of Psychiatry Prof. Faiza Athar, doctors, medical students, healthcare professionals, and paramedical staff. Participants carried placards highlighting the importance of empathy toward mental health patients, respect for their dignity, and the need for early medical intervention.
A specially prepared awareness skit was also presented during the event. The performance highlighted the social challenges faced by individuals living with schizophrenia, underscored the importance of family support, and stressed the need for timely treatment and community understanding.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Faiza Athar explained that schizophrenia is a serious brain disorder in which patients may hear voices or see things that are not real, affecting their ability to think clearly, make decisions, and interact effectively with others.
She noted that significant advances in psychiatric treatment have made it possible for many patients to lead normal and active lives. “With modern medicines, proper counseling, and continuous support, schizophrenia can be effectively managed,” she said.
Prof. Faiza Athar advised that individuals showing symptoms such as prolonged social withdrawal, confusion, irritability, or hearing imaginary voices should seek professional psychiatric consultation without delay. She emphasized that regular medication and consistent follow-up remain essential for successful treatment outcomes.
Prof. Farooq Afzal appreciated the efforts of the Department of Psychiatry in promoting mental health awareness and reaffirmed Lahore General Hospital’s commitment to strengthening mental health services and providing quality care to patients suffering from psychiatric disorders.
The event concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony, symbolizing a collective commitment to raising awareness about mental health issues and eliminating the stigma associated with psychiatric illnesses.
