WARSAW: A major cyberattack in Poland has reportedly resulted in the theft of medical data belonging to approximately 19 million citizens.
Polish Digital Affairs Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski said the attack targeted an online medical-record platform used by doctors and clinics. The company operating the platform has also confirmed that records of around 19 million patients were stolen.
Authorities said the stolen records could be linked with one another, raising concerns about the possible misuse of patients’ personal and medical information. The cyberattack is suspected to have been carried out for ransom.
Polish cybersecurity agencies are investigating the nature and motive of the attack, while the government has taken measures to protect the stolen information and prevent further damage.
The digital affairs minister said there was currently no evidence that the data had been stolen by another country. He added that the government would not negotiate with anyone or bow to blackmail.
