In a video posted on X, Trump called the plan the “Trump Dividend” and linked it to customs duty revenue and the country’s economic performance. He said a Republican majority in Congress would allow him to implement it. He claimed his administration was collecting large sums from tariffs and that the US economy was performing strongly. Warning of higher taxes and economic hardship if Democrats win, he asked voters to choose between his proposal and Democratic policies. He also referred to the $1,776 “Warriors Allowance” given to military personnel in December 2025.
According to reports, paying $5,000 to roughly 245 million adult citizens could cost more than $1.2 trillion. The proposal would require congressional approval, and experts have raised questions about its financing and impact on the budget.
Trump first floated the idea in September at the Republican Party’s midterm conference. Vice President JD Vance later said excluding higher earners could be considered and that the payments could be funded through tariff revenue.
