LAHORE: Principal Ameer-ud-Din Medical College (AMC), Prof. Dr. Jodat Saleem, has said that sports are not merely games but a foundation for physical and mental fitness, discipline and personality development.
He was addressing the inaugural ceremony of the Student and Sports Week at Postgraduate Medical Institute (PGMI) and Ameer-ud-Din Medical College.
The ceremony began with cake-cutting and the release of balloons. A large number of college administrators, faculty members and students participated in the event.
All student societies of the college presented a disciplined and colourful march-past to the beat of drums. Students participated enthusiastically, carrying colourful banners and flags representing their respective societies.
Among those who attended the ceremony and appreciated the students’ enthusiasm, discipline and abilities were Prof. Muhammad Shahid, Prof. Abad-ur-Rehman, Prof. Amina Ahsan Cheema, Prof. Hassan Salman Malik, Prof. Faisal Shah, Dr. Shaista Mubeen, Prof. Farhan Rashid, Prof. Nighat Haroon, Prof. Kanwal Saeed, Prof. Javed Magsi, Dr. Saira Zeeshan, Mrs. Faryad Hussain, Prof. Khurram Saleem, Prof. Farah Shafi and Prof. Nazish Saqlain, along with other senior faculty members.
Prof. Dr. Jodat Saleem said extracurricular activities were extremely important alongside medical education. He said the purpose of organising Student and Sports Week was to promote healthy activities, strengthen harmony among students and encourage a positive attitude towards sports.
He said such activities provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate their abilities and develop confidence beyond the classroom.
He said competitions in cricket, football, badminton, table tennis, athletics and other sports would be held during the week. These activities would not only enhance students’ physical abilities but also promote teamwork, a healthy competitive spirit and mutual cooperation.
At the conclusion of the inaugural ceremony, the Principal and faculty members appreciated the efforts, hard work and arrangements made by the student societies and organising committee.
The week-long festival will conclude with the distribution of trophies and certificates among players and participants who demonstrate outstanding performances.
Prof. Muhammad Shahid said the annual Student and Sports Week was a continuation of AMC’s longstanding tradition of giving equal importance to students’ physical health, mental fitness and personality development alongside academic achievement.
He said such activities expose students to the spirit of healthy competition and the importance of discipline, helping prepare them to become successful medical professionals in the future.
