Washington: US President Donald Trump has said the United States could leave its military campaign against Iran immediately, while warning European allies that Washington could withdraw its support if they do not change course.
Speaking at a midterm election rally in Kansas, Trump claimed that Iran would not acquire a nuclear weapon and that the US had achieved its main objective. “We could leave right now,” he said, although he did not announce a timetable or plan for ending military operations.
Trump claimed that Iran’s navy, air force, radar systems and air defences had been destroyed, adding that 229 Iranian fighter jets were scattered across runways. He also alleged that Iranian authorities had killed at least 75,000 protesters over the past eight months, but offered no evidence to support the claim.
On Truth Social, Trump wrote that the US stands with Europe, but warned: “If they don’t soon find their way, we will have no choice but to leave.” He accused European countries of failing to assist Washington during the conflict with Iran, despite the heavy US spending on NATO.
Analysts noted that the warning did not, by itself, constitute a formal announcement of a US withdrawal from Europe or NATO.
