Washington — A New York Times/Siena College poll, conducted about two weeks before the November 3 US midterm elections, found that only 36 percent of likely voters approved of President Donald Trump’s performance, while 59 percent disapproved. It is the lowest approval rating for Trump recorded in the poll.
The survey was conducted from October 12 to 19 among 3,494 likely voters. It gave Democrats an 11-point lead over Republicans in the contest for the House of Representatives, although this does not guarantee a congressional majority.
Inflation, housing costs, fuel prices and the war with Iran have emerged as major voter concerns. Nearly 69 percent of voters expressed dissatisfaction with the president’s handling of housing costs, while about 65 percent disapproved of his policy on the Iran war.
Voters expressed 15 points more confidence in Democrats than Republicans on inflation and housing costs, while Democrats held an eight-point lead on overall management of the economy.
However, Trump retains strong support among Republican voters, with 82 percent approving of his performance, while more than two-thirds of independent voters expressed dissatisfaction. Only 28 percent of likely voters said they were satisfied with the Democratic Party, eight points lower than those satisfied with the Republican Party.
