NEW DELHI: An Indian Army soldier was killed on Tuesday when a military tank sank in the Indira Gandhi Canal during routine training exercises in Rajasthan’s Sri Ganganagar district.
According to police, two soldiers were inside the tank at the time of the incident. One managed to escape, while the other remained trapped inside and drowned.
Authorities said it took several hours for police, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Civil Defence teams to retrieve the soldier’s body. The incident occurred as armoured vehicles and tanks were practicing canal-crossing maneuvers when one of the tanks became stuck midstream and started to submerge.
An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident is underway.
