BANNU, Pakistan — A suicide car bomb tore through a police checkpoint in the volatile Bannu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province late Saturday night, killing at least 15 police personnel and wounding several others in one of the deadliest attacks on security forces in the region this year.
Militants rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the Fateh Khel police post, reducing the structure to rubble. Rescue teams pulled three officers alive from the wreckage, as search and rescue operations continued into the early hours.
The victims were identified as Rahmat Ayaz, Sanaullah, Niaz Ali, Sahib, Saadullah, Kamran son of Mahmood Khan, Nematullah, Kamran, Abid Jani, Imran, Naeemullah, Siddiqullah, Mir Alam Khan, Rahatullah Khan, and Farooq Dad.
Senior police commander DIG Bannu Region Sajjad Khan visited the District Headquarters Hospital to meet the injured and vowed a firm response. “This will prove to be the last cowardly act of these terrorists,” he told reporters. “The Bannu Police will hunt down every terrorist and ensure their complete elimination from the region.”
No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. The assault comes amid a broader surge in militant activity across Pakistan’s northwestern tribal belt bordering Afghanistan.
