Washington — US President Donald Trump will welcome Chinese President Xi Jinping to Washington for a three-day high-level state visit, with talks between the leaders of the world’s two largest economies expected to cover trade, artificial intelligence, Taiwan and broader US-China relations.
Xi is set to arrive at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday US time, where Trump is expected to personally greet him near the aircraft. The visit, running from September 23 to 25, was extended at Trump’s invitation. A formal White House welcome ceremony will be held on Thursday, featuring a military flyover and an inspection of troops, followed by a state dinner.
This marks Xi’s first state visit to the US in nearly a decade, and the third in-person meeting between the two leaders since Trump began his second term.
The visit comes as the US-China trade truce reached in October 2025 is due to expire in November. Under that agreement, Washington suspended planned additional tariffs on Chinese goods, while Beijing eased restrictions on exports of rare earth elements and other materials critical to global industry.
US and Chinese officials held trade talks on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, focusing on non-tariff trade issues and agricultural exports. No major breakthroughs were reported, but negotiations are expected to continue in Washington following Xi’s arrival.
