In an emotionally-charged account of road rage and harassment in the Delhi-NCR region, female biker Sia told the story of the viral incident on the Golf Course Road in Gurugram, which she said involved an inebriated car, intentional stalking, and subsequent crashing into her two-wheeler.
The woman, who was from the South Delhi neighborhood of Kalkaji and was at the time being questioned by the Gurugram Police at her residence, narrated the horrific experience of stalking that she faced, first by the car that sped past her near an underpass, then slowed down, and then kept pace with her while the windows rolled down, one of the car occupants beckoned her to pull over, and they began swerving with intent to hit her.
Denouncing the driver’s public statement that the mishap was an unintended accident and that he lost control of his vehicle near a U-turn, Sia countered that video evidence on the driver’s malicious intent was clearly visible, as the car suddenly crossed multiple lanes to hit her motorcycle directly before speeding away from the site without stopping to help her.
Saddened by the unsafe conditions on arterial roads and initial police delays, Sia said that even after published the registration plate number of the vehicle online, the suspect was able to escape and continue making media statements about the case before police caught up.
“My protective riding gear saved my life,” she added, as she vowed to press for strict legal action against the driver to use the case as an example for road rage and intimidation against female commuters.
In the wake of massive outrage and watching the CCTV footage over and over again on Golf Course Road, the Gurugram Police registered a fresh case under section 109 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for attempt to murder (penalty of 10 years in jail), following which the accused driver was identified as Kalyan Bainsla of Dausa district of Rajasthan. He was subsequently arrested by police.
The police maintained that they will not tolerate lawlessness on the roads, and Sia said that maximum punishment must be meted out to driver so that there is no repeat of such episodes.
