LAHORE: The Punjab government has urged citizens to turn kitchen waste into compost instead of throwing it away, offering green credits under the Chief Minister Punjab Green Credit Programme.
In a message issued on the occasion of World Cleanup Day, the provincial government encouraged citizens to make use of household kitchen waste and help keep the environment clean.
Citizens have been asked to use fruit and vegetable peels, eggshells and other organic kitchen waste to prepare compost instead of disposing of it with regular household waste.
According to the Punjab government, citizens can earn three green credits by turning kitchen waste into compost. Three green credits are equivalent to Rs30,000.
The government said collecting kitchen waste properly and converting it into compost is an environment-friendly practice. It can help reduce the amount of household waste while the compost can be used for plants and gardening.
The Green Credit Programme aims to encourage citizens to take part in environment-friendly activities. The government has urged citizens to reduce waste, prepare compost at home and contribute to cleaner communities.
How to make compost from kitchen waste
Kitchen waste can be converted into organic compost by collecting it in layers in a pot, bucket, drum or a small pit.
The container should have several small holes at the bottom to allow excess water to drain out.
Start with a layer of dry leaves or straw, known as brown material, followed by a layer of vegetable and fruit peels, known as green material. Sprinkle a handful of garden soil over each layer and lightly spray water to maintain moisture.
The waste should be mixed every five to seven days to allow oxygen to circulate.
The government advised avoiding meat, bones, milk and oily waste as these can cause bad smells.
The compost can be ready for use in around two to three months.
