Billy Root, brother of England batting star Joe, calls time on his professional cricket career. @billyroot0 has officially announced his retirement from all formats of professional cricket.
The 34-year-old left-hander ends his decade in the game having played for Nottinghamshire, Leeds/Bradford MCCU, Warwickshire and, most notably, Glamorgan.
The Specsavers County Championship’s leading southpaw in 2018 was an established middle-order stalwart on the English domestic scene.
He signed for Glamorgan in 2019 and since then has been a mainstay of the Welsh side across all formats. His best moment to date came in 2021 when he played a significant part in helping Glamorgan lift the Royal London One-Day Cup – their first major silverware in 17 years.
In first-class cricket he has scored more than 4,000 runs, including eight hundreds, and had success with the bat in limited overs too.
Root looked back on the decision, saying: “Thank you to my team-mates, coaches and family for all their support over the years.
“Although I will no longer be playing on the game stage, my contribution to the success of Glamorgan and the decade I’ve played county cricket will stand me in good stead in English cricket.”
