Karachi University removes exam controller amid probe into failed students being passed

Associate Professor Dr Syed Ghufran of the Department of Food Science has been appointed as the new controller of examinations.

The alleged changes to examination results took place during the two-month tenure of the outgoing vice chancellor. The examination department acted on a written recommendation from the dean of the Faculty of Law seeking scrutiny of students’ results.

Following the written recommendation and approval from the acting vice chancellor, around 150 students of law colleges were declared successful in two subjects, despite having failed in the results initially issued by the university. More than 150 students from SM Law College and Islamia Law College had failed in the announced results.

According to the details, a large number of failed students were subsequently passed in BA and LLB examinations through a purported scrutiny committee. Former permanent Vice Chancellor Dr Khalid Iraqi had stopped the process during his tenure.

University rules require students to submit individual applications for scrutiny of examination papers. Under the university’s scrutiny rules, the annual system allows recounting of marks rather than rechecking of answer scripts. The previous permanent vice chancellor had therefore halted the process.

Former Controller of Examinations Dr Yasir denied that any students had been passed or failed through the process. He declined to comment further on the matter.

Dean of the Faculty of Law Barrister Sarfraz Mitlo said the university had formed a scrutiny committee with the vice chancellor’s approval because students had been treated unfairly.

He said answer scripts were examined again in the presence of the principals of both colleges and the controller of examinations. Mitlo maintained that no student who had received zero marks was declared successful.

He also said university rules allowed answer scripts to be examined again.
