US President Donald Trump singled out Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham at a political rally at the Covelli Centre in Youngstown, Ohio. While addressing supporters at a campaign rally ahead of the US midterm elections, Trump referenced the size of the WNBA player’s lips and wondered whether her attendance would bring more crowds.
What Trump Said About Sophie Cunningham
He Inserted a Surprise Pit Stop from His Political Road Trip to Talk About the WNBA Player:
“You, I like Sophie. You got a lot of guys want to go and look at her. She’s a beauty,” Trump told the crowd. “You’re not supposed to be saying that anymore,” he added.
Playfully backtracking, he joked about political optics:
“But I beg, I beg as a politician, just beg let me take it back. Once a politician is talking about a woman’s beauty, that’s usually the high point of their career in contemporary political landscape.”
“Then he made a little joke about how much of a value she is to a franchise.
“So Sophie is a really nice looking young lady, you might not mind her being on the team. No, not to help you out in terms of points, but to help you out in terms of attendance, attendance would be very helpful.”
The Event: These comments were made at a political rally in Youngstown, Ohio, where Trump was speaking on behalf of the Republican candidates.
After closing out the 2026 WNBA season with teammate Caitlin Clark with the Indiana Fever, Cunningham is set to become an unrestricted free agent following a first-round playoff series loss to Las Vegas. The guard, who turns 30 next month, is looking for a new team.
