ISLAMABAD, September 7, 2026: Jamaat-e-Islami has handed six proposals to the government team for abolishing the petroleum levy, JI leader Liaquat Baloch said, ARY News reported.
Speaking after talks with the government team, Liaquat Baloch said the prime minister had formed a team for negotiations and JI had submitted its proposals to the government.
He said the government team had also been informed that the party’s sit-ins and protests would continue.
Liaquat Baloch said the petroleum levy was affecting the economy and urged the rulers to reduce their own expenditures. He said there was room to provide relief to the public by cutting government expenses.
The JI leader said Rs80 was being directly charged as a levy on petrol and diesel. He expressed hope that the government would review the proposals within three days and provide relief to the people.
Earlier, Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman had made it clear that the party’s sit-ins would not end unless the petroleum levy was abolished.
Addressing participants of the Lahore sit-in, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said a successful strike had been observed across the country on the JI’s call. He alleged that dozens of party workers had been arrested and that the Sindh government had registered cases against its workers under terrorism provisions.
He said JI had told government ministers that experts were available to help the country get rid of the International Monetary Fund. He also said the party had demanded that official vehicles be limited to 1,300cc.
Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said the government delegation had been told that the party would add one new sit-in every day, while a Rawalpindi sit-in would also begin soon.
