KARACHI: The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) said on Saturday that K-Electric (KE) is carrying out a scheduled technical shutdown at the Gharo grid transmission facility, suspending power supply to the Gharo Pumping Station.
According to a KWSC spokesperson, the shutdown began at 10:30am and power supply is expected to remain suspended until 7pm.
The spokesperson said technical work was under way at the Gharo grid transmission facility, resulting in the suspension of electricity to the pumping station.
The Gharo Pumping Station is expected to remain non-operational for around 11 hours due to the power shutdown, the spokesperson said.
The temporary electricity suspension is expected to reduce Karachi’s water supply by around 30 million gallons, the KWSC said.
The corporation currently supplies around 650 million gallons of water to the city daily. Despite the shutdown, it said around 620 million gallons of water would be supplied on Saturday.
Power breakdown halts 10 pumps supplying water to Karachi
The spokesperson said the temporary power outage would partially affect water supplies to Bin Qasim, Shah Faisal, PNS Mehran, PAF Base Faisal and Karsaz.
Water supply will return to normal once electricity to the Gharo Pumping Station is restored, the spokesperson added.
Previous Dhabeji outage
Earlier, on September 14, 2026, a power breakdown at the Dhabeji Pumping Station resulted in a 17-hour outage and caused a shortage of around 198 million gallons of water in Karachi, according to the KWSC.
Residents in several parts of the city faced disruptions in water supply following the power outage at the pumping station.
Dhabeji is Karachi’s primary water intake point and relies heavily on an uninterrupted power supply. Power outages at the facility can cause immediate disruptions to the city’s water distribution system.
A K-Electric spokesperson had said a fire in bushes near the pumping station had caused a cable fault.
Dumlotee pipeline project
Separately, the KWSC and Frontier Works Organization (FWO) recently signed an agreement for the construction of a dedicated pipeline to supply water to the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) from Dumlotee on the outskirts of Karachi.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab said the new pipeline would provide additional water to the city.
