Govt explains decision to purchase 45 bulletproof vehicles for SCO summit

Bullet Proof Vehicles

ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to purchase 45 bulletproof vehicles for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit scheduled to be held in Islamabad in August or September 2027, ARY News reported.

The Cabinet Division issued a clarification on the decision, saying the SCO summit is among the most important international events for Pakistan.

Heads of state and government, as well as senior officials of international organisations, are expected to attend the summit. The Cabinet Division said safe, reliable and standard transport arrangements for foreign guests are necessary.

The division said maximum security measures are unavoidable in view of the security situation.

According to the Cabinet Division, the latest bulletproof vehicles currently available with it are 2016 models. These vehicles do not meet the required standards for the SCO summit.

The proposal to purchase 45 bulletproof vehicles was considered at different forums, while the number was set according to the minimum requirement for the summit, the Cabinet Division said.

Around 300 other non-bulletproof vehicles will also be hired for the SCO summit.

The Cabinet Division said the SCO summit is an opportunity to highlight Pakistan’s importance at the international level and its significance should not be ignored, trivialised or given a political colour.
