Carpooling made mandatory for Lahore schools amid worsening smog

Smog

LAHORE: Schools in Lahore have been directed to make carpooling among students, parents and staff mandatory as part of measures to control smog, ARY News reported.

According to details, the Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has directed all schools to promote carpooling among students, parents and staff amid dangerously high levels of air pollution and smog in Lahore.

Director General Environment Punjab Abdullah Niazi Sheikh has ordered that the measure be made a formal part of the anti-smog strategy.

School administrations have been directed to facilitate shared use of vehicles, with mutual consent, among students, parents and staff travelling from the same areas or along the same routes.

Heavy traffic outside schools during morning hours and vehicle emissions are major contributors to air pollution. Reducing the number of vehicles around schools can help control smog, according to the authorities.

DG Environment Abdullah Niazi Sheikh said unnecessary and individual use of vehicles is worsening the air pollution problem in Lahore, making emergency measures necessary.
