Pakistan and countries around the world are observing World Mental Health Day on October 10 to raise awareness about mental health conditions and address the stigma associated with them.
According to health experts, one in every four people in Pakistan experiences mental health challenges, while globally, one in every seven people lives with a mental health condition. However, a lack of awareness and the social stigma surrounding mental illness prevent many people from seeking professional help.
Dr. Atiq Department of Psychiatry, Aga Khan Hospital speaking to ARY Newssaid this year’s World Mental Health Day theme, announced by the World Health Organization, is “Real Stories, Real Voices, Real Change.” The theme highlights the importance of listening to people who have experienced depression and psychological distress to better understand their struggles and improve mental health support.
Mahnoor Channa Department of Psychiatry, Jinnah Hospital urged people not to consider sadness, anxiety, or emotional distress signs of weakness. They recommend speaking to a trusted family member or consulting a mental health professional when experiencing psychological difficulties.
Experts stress that encouraging open conversations about mental health is essential to breaking the stigma and ensuring that people receive the support they need. Talking about emotional struggles can help ease the burden and encourage individuals to seek timely assistance.
