Touqeer Nazir, the main accused in Waseem’s death, was killed in an alleged encounter with Punjab’s Crime Control Department (CCD) on Wednesday, police said.
According to the CCD, Nazir had escaped from police custody in Multan, prompting police to launch efforts to apprehend him.
CCD officials said they attempted to stop two motorcyclists near the Northern Bypass in Bahawalpur. However, the suspects allegedly opened fire while attempting to flee.
The CCD said one man was killed in the exchange of fire and was later identified as Nazir. Police have not provided further details about the encounter.
Earlier, Punjab Information and Culture Minister Azma Bokhari described Waseem’s death as a tragic incident that had shaken the public. In a statement posted on X, she said women and children were Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s “red line” and that such crimes would not be tolerated in Punjab.
According to Bokhari, Waseem belonged to Muzaffargarh. His father died when he was very young, and his mother later married a man named Jafar. Waseem had three siblings, and all the children had been placed in an orphanage.
The minister said Waseem’s sister had left the orphanage six months earlier to live with their mother, while one of his brothers remained at the institution.
She added that Waseem had been handed over to a contractor, Touqeer Nazir, about a week before the incident to learn electrical work.
On October 19, Waseem reportedly fled after being mistreated at his workplace. According to the minister, Nazir and his accomplice, Amjad, chased him in a car for approximately one kilometre before running him over.
