Amazon is now releasing Kindle software version 5.20.2, which adds the AI-powered tool “Ask This Book” to supported e-readers. This feature has been on the Kindle iOS app since last December, and Amazon has hinted for over a year that it would eventually arrive on dedicated devices.
The update is said to be one of Amazon’s largest firmware downloads, at about 643 MB.
You can use the feature through the search function or by highlighting a word or passage. It works as an interactive reading companion, answering questions about plot points and characters, giving summaries, or following up on earlier questions and answers.
Users can now limit questions to what they’ve read so far to avoid spoilers, or let them cover the whole book.
There are some limitations. You need an internet connection, and the feature doesn’t work with sideloaded titles or Send-to-Kindle documents. Only certain Amazon-published or distributed ebooks are supported. The update installs automatically and isn’t listed for manual download on Amazon’s update page.
Amazon hasn’t released any official notes yet, so it’s still unclear which devices are compatible, especially for 2024 models. Recent reports indicate that users with the new 2026 models will definitely get the update.
