Sperm Whale

KARACHI: The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has reported that a sperm whale was spotted 40 nautical miles southwest of Karachi, ARY News reported.

The WWF stated that the sperm whale measured 45 feet in length, adding that this is the first documented sighting of a sperm whale in the waters off Karachi.

Zahid Maker, a board member of the WWF, spotted the whale during a sea expedition. Video footage of the sperm whale was also recorded, capturing its distinct physical features.

Prior to this discovery, as many as 26 species of whales and dolphins had been documented in Pakistani waters.

Fishermen’s nets, collisions with ships, and marine pollution continue to pose severe threats to these marine species.

Sperm whales have extraordinary diving capabilities, reaching depths of up to 102 kilometers in search of food.

Earlier, various species of toothed whales had also been recorded along the Pakistani coastline.
