KARACHI, August 30, 2026: A 17-year-old eighth-grade student, Irshad, has died allegedly while in police custody in Malir, according to his family, ARY News reported.

The family said Malir City police raided their home in Lasi Goth and took Irshad into custody. Following his death, the family and residents staged a protest at Jinnah Hospital. The family also held a protest outside the Karachi Press Club with the teenager’s body.

Police have denied that Irshad died due to torture in custody and presented a different account of the incident.

According to police, Malir City police had raided the area to arrest a suspected drug dealer, Arshad. Police said Arshad was arrested and ice was recovered from his possession.

Police said Irshad was the suspect’s neighbour and tried to flee during the operation out of fear of being arrested.

According to the police version, Irshad jumped between rooftops while trying to escape and became entangled in electricity wires. He suffered an electric shock and was taken to Jinnah Hospital, where doctors confirmed his death.

The family, however, has alleged that Irshad died after being taken into police custody.
