A one-month-old baby has had his hand amputated following what his family alleges was medical negligence at a private hospital in Karachi.
Police have registered a case against a doctor and hospital staff at the Pirabad police station.
The baby’s father told police that he took his one-month-old son, Azmatullah, to a hospital in Orangi Town on 31 August, 2026 after he became unwell.
According to the father, a doctor, Yasir Inam, advised staff to insert a cannula into the baby’s hand and bandage it.
He said three members of staff carried out the procedure and injections were administered through the cannula six or seven times.
Four days later, the father said he returned to the same hospital with his son. When the bandage was removed, he found that the baby’s hand had turned completely black.
The father said the doctor prescribed medication and told him the infection would improve. However, as he became increasingly concerned about the baby’s condition, he took him to Jinnah Hospital.
Doctors there allegedly told him that an infection had developed because of an improperly inserted cannula and that the hand would have to be amputated.
The father has alleged that the amputation was the result of negligence by Dr Yasir Inam and three unidentified members of staff.
Police have registered a case against the doctor and hospital staff. Pirabad police said they had contacted the healthcare commission to assist with the investigation.
The hospital administration said the family had visited the hospital in August and claimed they had left after having the cannula inserted without informing staff.
The administration said it had only recently been informed that the baby’s hand had been amputated and that it was investigating the incident. It added that the hospital was prepared to face any legal proceedings.
