Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, said artificial intelligence is so powerful it could play a role in events that lead to a billion deaths, according toForbes.
He called for laws to regulate this technology, stressing that companies cannot be trusted to regulate themselves.
Speaking with TV host Kristen Welker, Gates highlighted the risk that people with bad intentions could use the newest AI tools.
“AI is certainly powerful enough to lead to events that, you know, will cause a billion deaths,” he said.
Gates believes that the mix of advanced AI and people with harmful intentions is a new and serious threat. He also said the government should help set rules for AI developers. In his opinion, lawmakers and law enforcement should help decide on required safety and monitoring steps.
He stressed that it is not enough for tech companies to set their own limits. When asked if laws are needed, Gates said yes.
In August, Gates wrote an essay on his website about the dangers of AI. He mentioned risks like job losses, more fraud and disinformation, easier cyberattacks, and higher chances of bioterrorism. He also warned that if only a few people control AI, it could make inequality worse.
At the same time, the Gates Foundation said it plans to spend at least $1 billion over two years to help more people access AI. The money will go to projects in education, healthcare, farming, and building digital infrastructure.
Leaders of top AI companies also warned the United Nations about the dangers AI could pose to humanity.
