MUSCAT: Oman has launched the Midad Digital Centre at Innovation Park Muscat, establishing a national platform focused on knowledge transfer, digital skills development and innovation in emerging technologies.
The centre was officially inaugurated by the Research and Innovation Authority (RIA) under the patronage of Dr Saif bin Abdullah Al Hadabi, Chairman of the RIA. The launch brought together representatives from government institutions, the private sector, academia and the technology industry.
Midad will focus on advanced communications and emerging technologies, including 5G networks, the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) in Oman.
Its programmes are designed to strengthen national technical capabilities while creating practical pathways for research and innovative ideas to develop into products and services.
Najah bint Mohammed Al Rashidi, Acting Director-General of the Innovation Centre, described the initiative as an important step towards strengthening Oman’s digital infrastructure and supporting the development of a sustainable, knowledge-based economy in line with Oman Vision 2040.
She also highlighted the role of partnerships between national institutions and global technology companies, with Omani youth positioned at the centre of skills development and innovation efforts.

Petra Schirren, President of Ericsson Gulf, said the launch represented a significant milestone in Oman’s digital ecosystem and reaffirmed Ericsson’s commitment to supporting local talent and developing future-ready skills.
The centre is operated by the Ibn Firnas Academy and will deliver applied programmes, including its Digital Lab, giving students opportunities to work on robotics, digital applications, programming, electronics and game development.
The initiative is supported by a partnership involving the RIA, the Ministry of Finance, Ericsson, Omantel and the Ibn Firnas Academy Oman.
The RIA provides institutional oversight, while the Ministry of Finance supported the project through the Partnership for Development programme. Ericsson serves as the technology and knowledge partner, while Omantel supports the centre’s technical environment and integration with the national telecommunications ecosystem.
Officials said the centre is intended to strengthen cooperation between government, academia and industry while developing the skills required for Oman’s transition towards a more innovation- and knowledge-driven digital economy.
