Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has acknowledged the outside media attention and in-room chatter caused by her recent public statements, maintaining the team chemistry has not been disrupted in the locker room.
In response to media coverage and fan reaction, Cunningham said outside noise hasn’t distracted the team in what is a critical regular season and playoff drive.
‘Locker Room Is Good’: Cunningham on Team Chemistry
In the face of headlines surrounding him and the fractured fan response, Cunningham insisted the team is still unified when it comes to their basketball aspirations.
Cunningham has dismissed outside noise – doesn’t matter in our preparation every day or how we treat and practice with our guys.
WNBA star says that the Indiana Fever locker room is better than ever, united and ready to work together to produce excellent results.
Cunningham addressed the increasingly increased amount of media attention in WNBA news for the league’s improvement and global attentiveness.
What Prompted the Media Attention?
The attention on Cunningham grew out of her remarks to the press about transgender women in sports and Title IX earlier this month:
Cunningham said she is in favor of preserving biological differences among women athletes in Title IX, while also arguing that her opinions are not intended to harm any group.
Her comments resulted in fan reactions at multiple arenas and protest outside host arenas during recent Fever Road games.
The Indiana Fever announced that they would continue to foster an inclusive atmosphere, noting opinions of players are personal opinions and the Fever organization remains dedicated to an inclusive fanbase.
Instead of letting outside commentaries pull their focus away, the Indiana Fever are looking towards the veteran leadership to help make sure the team remain focused on preparing for each game in a highly competitive WNBA league.
