BUNER: Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has warned of nationwide protests if Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif fails to fulfil his promise to abolish the petroleum levy.

Speaking to the media in Buner, Hafiz Naeem said the prime minister should fulfil his promise and announce the abolition of what he called an unjust tax.

He warned that if the promise was not fulfilled, Jamaat-e-Islami would launch a strong protest across the country.

Hafiz Naeem said people were paying 35 percent “ransom” when purchasing petrol and had now realised what was happening in the name of the levy.

He also said unjust agreements had been made in the name of independent power producers (IPPs).

Earlier, Senate Opposition Leader Raja Nasir Abbas said Jamaat-e-Islami had accepted an invitation to attend the All Parties Conference (APC).

Speaking to the media after meeting Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, Raja Nasir Abbas said it was the responsibility of all political parties to sit together and consult on national issues.

He said political parties should collectively discuss Pakistan’s problems and added that Hafiz Naeem had been invited to attend the APC.

Raja Nasir Abbas thanked Hafiz Naeem for opposing the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule, saying such measures would not help Pakistan progress and would instead lead to further crisis.

Hafiz Naeem also confirmed that Jamaat-e-Islami had accepted the invitation to attend the APC and would participate.

He said the national agenda should focus on improving the law and order and economic situation in Pakistan.

Hafiz Naeem also reiterated that Jamaat-e-Islami opposed the imposition of governor’s rule or emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
