Rockstar confirms GTA 6 map is bigger than anyone originally imagined

Rockstar Games previously said the GTA 6 map would be about twice as big as GTA 5’s. But a new Edge Magazine interview hints that Leonida could be even larger. Fans also get a look at building interiors and how much of the world will be open on November 19.

Simon Parkin interviewed Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson for 90 minutes. During the demo, Nelson guided Jason and Lucia, showing just how big Vice City and the nearby areas are. Parkin says the landmass is “nearly as large as the playable maps of GTA 4, GTA 5, and RDR 2 combined”.

There’s some debate about how Rockstar compared the landmass sizes of previous games to GTA 6. Still, players will have plenty to explore on the new map. The GTA VI O’Clock podcast also confirmed that fans can start exploring as soon as the game launches.

Just like in GTA 5, players won’t have to finish missions to reach far-off places when GTA 6 comes out. The developers want the game to feel even more like a sandbox. In the gameplay session with Rob Nelson, it was clear how easy it is to get sidetracked in the busy streets of Vice City.

Jason and Lucia can get caught up by going into homes. Co-development lead Aaron Garbut said the GTA 6 map has “an order of magnitude more interiors” than earlier games. Each home feels different, with signs of NPCs and families living there. Garbut mentioned he still finds new buildings to check out.

Edge Magazine also shared new screenshots showing different parts of the open world. This is good news for the mapping project, which uses images, trailers, and leaks as resources. While the Vice City Collection comes with a Leonida chart, it’s not clear if Rockstar will include something similar in Xbox and PS5 cases.
