KARACHI: The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) continued its operation at a call centre in Karachi’s Tipu Sultan area, with several people taken into custody for questioning, ARY News reported.
According to NCCIA sources, the raid was conducted last night and the agency’s staff are still present at the call centre. Several people were detained during the operation, while questioning is under way.
A large number of people gathered outside the call centre following the raid. Police personnel were deployed in view of the situation, East SSP said.
Families of the employees said that minors were also present inside the call centre. One family said their 17-year-old son had joined the workplace just two days ago.
A father said his 14-year-old son also worked at the call centre and that he was not being allowed to meet him. Families said they had been waiting outside since morning and did not know whether the children inside had been given food.
They appealed to the authorities to allow them to speak to their children over the phone.
Meanwhile, protesters staged a sit-in on Shahrah-e-Faisal against the NCCIA raid and blocked one track of the road.
However, police and protesters held successful negotiations, following which the demonstrators ended their sit-in.
Earlier, the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) decided to extend its cybercrime awareness campaign to a door-to-door level.
Under this initiative, NCCIA teams will visit citizens’ homes to raise awareness and protect the public from cybercrimes, including online fraud and cyber harassment.
An Additional Director of the NCCIA stated that the teams will educate citizens, students, and children on the fundamental principles of cybersecurity.
As part of the campaign, the NCCIA has already conducted special lectures at the Al-Khidmat Foundation and the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore, where participants were briefed on online financial fraud and phishing prevention.
The agency warned that strict legal action will be taken against individuals involved in internet-based illegal activities and cyberbullying.
