FIFA probes World Cup comments on Argentina

Egypt and Argentina

FIFA has launched formal disciplinary proceedings against key members of Egypt’s national football team following explosive comments directed at officiating after their 3–2 Round of 16 elimination by Argentina at the 2026 World Cup.

The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) confirmed that FIFA and IFAB are examining statements made by head coach Hossam Hassan, team director Ibrahim Hassan, and forward Mostafa Ziko.

What Led to the Investigation?

During their World Cup Round of 16 clash in Atlanta, Egypt held a 2–0 lead late in the match before Argentina staged a three-goal comeback to secure a 3–2 victory. The aftermath saw several contentious refereeing decisions spark intense criticism from the Egyptian camp:

Disallowed Goal: A second-half goal scored by Mostafa Ziko was ruled out by referee François Letexier for an alleged foul during the buildup.

Penalty Appeal Dismissal: Mohamed Salah went down inside Argentina’s penalty box during a late attack, but no foul was awarded.

Match Officiating Complaints: Head coach Hossam Hassan alleged bias in favor of Argentina qualifying, while Ziko sarcastically claimed the match outcome was predetermined.

In response to the match events, the EFA submitted a formal complaint requesting the removal of referee François Letexier from future fixtures. FIFA has already fined Egypt goalkeeping coach Saafan Al-Sagheer for on-pitch protests.

Individuals Named in Proceedings

FIFA is currently reviewing disciplinary cases involving several members of the team staff and players.

Hossam Hassan, the Head Coach, is under review for critical post-match media statements regarding officiating.

Ibrahim Hassan, the Team Director, also faces a case under review for alleged misconduct and statements made following the full-time whistle.

Mostafa Ziko, a Forward, is being reviewed over comments claiming tournament bias.

Meanwhile, Saafan Al-Sagheer, the Goalkeeping Coach, has already been fined by FIFA for on-pitch dissent against match officials.

Egyptian FA Official Response

The Egyptian Football Association acknowledged the disciplinary process in an official statement, emphasizing both compliance and legal support for their staff:

“The federation affirms its respect for FIFA’s regulations and procedures… necessary legal memoranda will be submitted within the specified deadlines, while confirming its support and backing for those concerned by the proceedings.”

Sanctions have not yet been formally issued against Hassan, Ziko, or Ibrahim Hassan as legal submissions remain ongoing.
