As many as 33 senior government officials who moved abroad after retirement are continuing to receive their pensions in foreign currency, according to official documents presented in parliament of Pakistan by Interior Ministry.
The documents show that the government is paying these retired officials a total of Rs.342.1 million a year on account of pensions.
The officials retired from various government departments and are now living in different countries. Their pensions are being paid in the currencies of the countries where they reside.
In some cases, retired officials living abroad are receiving their pensions partly in foreign currency and partly in Pakistani rupees, the documents state.
The figures were included in a report submitted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to parliament, detailing retired officials who are now residing overseas.
The payments are expected to raise questions in parliament over the impact of foreign-currency pensions on Pakistan’s national finances and foreign-exchange reserves.
