Golden State Warriors to sign Brandon Williams to one-year deal

The Golden State Warriors have added needed backcourt depth, agreeing to a one-year, $2.6 million veteran minimum contract with free-agent guard Brandon Williams.

Sources close to Williams and his representatives, Derek Lafayette and Curtis Lawrence of Priority Sports, confirmed the agreement to ESPN’s Shams Charania on Tuesday.

Williams, 26, was considered by many the best remaining point guard on the free-agent market, coming off the last three seasons of his contract with the Dallas Mavericks.

Reason for the signing to Golden State

The signing filled an immediate need. Back-up point guard Pat Spencer went to the Phoenix Suns in free agency, leaving Golden State lacking an experienced, true point guard for the second unit.

  1. A dedicated playmaking point guard on the bench: With not having a primary point guard on the roster, the ball would likely be left to Brandin Podziemski and De’Anthony Melton, who are off-ball specialists. Williams allows both guards to return to their primary strengths while a quick, attack-happy guard can manage the second unit.
  2. Energy and fast pace from the bench: After a great season with Dallas, Williams looks like one of the next up-and-coming guards in the league and certainly fits into the Warriors’ up and down tempo offensively with his blazing speed with the ball and his ability to score it from all over the floor, especially driving to the basket.
  3. Cap efficiency: Due to his four years of NBA experience, his contract is only charged against their salary cap, luxury tax bill and their aprons. By being paid only the league minimum, Golden State is now at 14 standard contracts heading into camp, which does leave room against the cap for them to use their remaining luxury-tax room on player number 15.

What to Watch: Perimeter Shooting

While he has shown himself to be an incredible finisher this season in Dallas knocking down over 55 percent of his shots inside the arc last season-his next challenge is the 3pt.

At only about 23 percent last season, how efficient he will become as a floor spacer in Golden State’s offense under Steve Kerr will go a long way toward earning minutes in crunchtime situations with the Warriors.
