ISLAMABAD: The preliminary inquiry report into the devastating fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), which claimed the lives of 14 newborns, has recommended the removal of 10 officers, including PIMS Executive Director Prof Dr Rana Imran Sikandar, from their posts, sources said.
The report was submitted to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif by the head of the inquiry committee, former interior secretary Shahid Khan.
According to sources, the inquiry committee has identified the causes of the PIMS tragedy and determined those responsible for the incident.
The committee has recommended the removal of 10 officers and relevant staff members, including the PIMS executive director.
The report also recommends the removal of five senior PIMS officials, including Deputy Executive Director (Medical-IH) Dr Mutahir Shah and Joint Executive Director Dr Muhammad Iqbal Durrani.
The committee has also recommended removing Deputy Executive Director (Non-Medical) Dr. Aneza Jalil and Hassan Durrani from their respective positions.
According to sources, the committee held the officials and relevant staff responsible for negligence and dereliction of duty.
The report also includes recommendations submitted by the incumbent acting Secretary, National Health Services, Regulation and Coordination Division, Capt. (Retd.) Muhammad Mahmood, sources said.
According to the committee’s findings, PIMS was being run in an extremely unprofessional manner and lacked an effective administrative structure.

The committee has recommended that professional appointments be made in place of the officers proposed for removal.
It has also recommended establishing a formal governing board for PIMS to ensure effective oversight and management of the hospital.
The committee further recommended regular monitoring of PIMS and the establishment of a proper administrative structure for running the institution.
PM Summons Meeting on PIMS Inquiry Report
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has summoned a meeting this evening to review the findings and recommendations of the PIMS fire inquiry report, sources said.
Federal Minister for Health Mustafa Kamal and other relevant officials are expected to attend the meeting.
The prime minister will be briefed on the inquiry report and its recommendations, sources said.
