Pakistan’s rice exports rose sharply in August, pushing exports during the first two months of the current financial year to a record level.
Rice exports increased by 22 percent in August to 308,000 tonnes, according to figures released in Karachi.
Basmati rice exports recorded a particularly significant increase, rising by 58 percent to 78,000 tonnes. Exports of other varieties also increased by 14 percent, reaching 231,000 tonnes.
The value of rice exports rose by 31 percent in August to $192 million.
Basmati rice accounted for a significant share of the increase, with export earnings from the variety rising by 70 percent to $88 million.
Overall, Pakistan exported 655,000 tonnes of rice during the first two months of the financial year, a 20 percent increase compared with the same period previously and the highest level recorded.
During the period, basmati rice exports rose by 43 percent, while exports of other varieties increased by 15 percent.
